Background of the Study

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by high blood glucose levels, affecting millions of people worldwide, including Nigeria (WHO, 2024). Effective self-care, including blood sugar monitoring, medication adherence, dietary control, and lifestyle modifications, is critical in managing diabetes and preventing complications (Adebayo & Salami, 2024). Mobile health (mHealth) applications have emerged as a valuable tool for improving diabetes self-management by providing real-time monitoring, reminders, and educational resources (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024).

In Jigawa State, diabetes prevalence is rising, yet healthcare access remains a challenge, particularly in rural areas. Mobile health applications offer a promising solution to bridge this gap. However, there is limited research on their effectiveness in improving self-care practices among diabetic patients in the state. This study aims to assess the role of mobile health applications in diabetes self-care, evaluating their adoption, effectiveness, and associated challenges.

Statement of the Problem

Despite advancements in diabetes management, many patients in Jigawa State struggle with self-care due to inadequate healthcare access, lack of awareness, and poor adherence to treatment plans (Ogunbanjo & Bello, 2024). While mobile health applications are increasingly used in healthcare delivery, their impact on diabetes self-care in Jigawa State remains unclear.

This study evaluates the effectiveness of mobile health applications in promoting diabetes self-care, identifying factors influencing their adoption and potential barriers to their usage.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the adoption rate of mobile health applications among diabetic patients in Jigawa State.
  2. To evaluate the impact of mobile health applications on diabetes self-care practices.
  3. To identify challenges affecting the effective use of mobile health applications for diabetes management.

Research Questions

  1. What is the adoption rate of mobile health applications among diabetic patients in Jigawa State?
  2. How do mobile health applications influence self-care practices among diabetes patients?
  3. What are the challenges affecting the use of mobile health applications for diabetes management?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Mobile health application adoption has no significant impact on diabetes self-care.
  2. There is no significant relationship between mobile health application usage and treatment adherence.
  3. Barriers to mobile health application use do not significantly affect diabetes self-care practices.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on diabetic patients in Jigawa State, evaluating their use of mobile health applications and their impact on self-care. Limitations include variations in digital literacy and smartphone accessibility among participants.
